Kana spent most of her younger years learning how to fend for herself; learning about the streets and what they had to offer for a stray cat like herself. It didn’t turn out to be a lot.
With the help of other friendlier cats, she was able to learn quickly about the make-shift rules of cats. This was a human’s world, and she had to get by with what she could make down. The most important rule for any stray was;
As she reached her prime, she became much more daring and violent. She possessed the abilities and smarts of any other local cat. That fueled a dangerously confident and cocky attitude that nearly cost her life.
Betrayal, pain, and blood spilled for her stupidities and after a little rough housing, she decided to leave the hard dark streets and live peacefully.
Despite being small and light most of her life, she ended up living pass 10 years and grew to weight more than 8 pounds.
She met the qualifications to become a bakeneko.
THE BAKENEKO
early years
Kana was reborn as a bakeneko, and upon being reborn, she was taken in by an older yokai named CHIEKO (恵子) who was also a bakeneko. Chieko brought back Kana to her little traditional home in the mountains. She was the one who taught Kana how to speak and write in Japanese, afterwards, teaching her basic English. Besides how to speak, Chieko was the one who taught her how to use her powers, instilled virtues in her, and raised her as her own. Chieko was a second mother to little Kana.
It was here that Kana learned all about the different kinds of yokai, their customs, and rules. Despite living in a world of magic and different creatures, she had the desire to return to living among humans in cities, like when she was a stray.
Chieko forbidden her from stepping foot in human towns, because Kana did not have full control of her powers yet. And seeing a transformation happen in plain sight, could frighten a lot of people.
Despite Chieko's wishes, Kana decided to head out to the festival and just as her care taker predicted, she lost
control of her transformation and reverted back to a cat in the middle of the festival. The people weren't so accepting of her, and began to circle her while reciting names at her like
MONSTER. And, in a panic, she lashed out and reverted back to her purest yokai form. A large black beast, ressembling a cat, but of greater size than a tiger or lion. In the form, she attacked the townspeople in a fit of rage and anguish.
She would be the monster than people wanted her to be. After the damage was done, and she came back to her senses, she saw the mess she made and simply
ran. Out of breath, and fearing for her life, she returned home to apologize to Chieko, only to find that she had vanished. There was no explaination to her dissappearance, but Kana only
blamed herself.
If only she listened. If only she did want Chieko had asked of her. Fearing for her life, she lived in recluse for years.
During this period is when Kana gained more control over her powers. She visted other yokais, and read to gain knowledge. She never lost her interest to return to the human world. After feeling more comfortable with herself, she left the place she once considered home to venture out.
later years
A lot of what Kana knows is self-taught, Chikeo only taught Kana to read and write. As she grew older, she realized that she wanted to go to the place that revolves around any normal teenager; SCHOOL. But, education costs money, and education isn't cheap.
She decided that she wasn't going to get that amount any time soon, working normal human jobs. After an afternoon of applying for work, an older business man offered her money for simply keeping him company, and that started her on the path to compensated dating. Keep in mind that she's only 16 at the time.
In the short time of a year, she was able to raise enough tutition cost for two years at any public or private school, also she'd gotten luxurious items, and a working cellphone. They were all items provided by her cilents. Of course, not without paying a dear price. To say that the experience didn't take a toll on her, was a lie. She's lost a lot in that one year, but once she had all the money she dumped this lifestyle. She only used the phone that her cilents provided, and none of them actually knew her real name, so it was easy to cut off ties. To harrass or find her was not in their best interest either, as these were men with money and usually in delicate positions of power.
After this ordeal, she needed to find a school that would accept her sketchy situation, and the only place that would was Aki's All Girls High. The staff pitied her sob stories, and since she had the money, she allowed her to take the entrance exam and enter the school as a 'transfer' student.
